Nuestra Señora de Loreto (Argentina)

Weather…

Nuestra Señora de Loreto was one of the most significant Jesuit missions in the Misiones Province, playing a key role in the cultural development of the region. Founded in 1610 in the Guayrá region, it was moved to its current location in 1632 following an arduous exodus from the attacks of slave hunters. The mission was famous for establishing South America's first printing press around the year 1700, where important texts in the Guaraní language were printed. Architecturally, Loreto was distinguished by a massive church and a sophisticated water system that supplied the community. At its peak in the 18th century, it was a center for music, art, and agricultural production, particularly of mate tea. After the Jesuit expulsion in 1767, the population resisted, but eventually the settlement was abandoned and overgrown by vegetation. Today's ruins, including the foundations of the church and burial sites, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage and testify to the high organizational skill and cultural legacy of the Jesuit-Guaraní culture.
