Cambyretá, a town in the Itapúa Department of southern Paraguay, lies directly north of Encarnación and together with the capital of the department forms a continuous metropolitan area. The name comes from Guaraní and means roughly the place of breasts, referring to the hilly landscape of the region. The town was recognised as an independent municipality in 1979 and developed rapidly thanks to its proximity to dynamic Encarnación, becoming a preferred residential area. With around 50 000 inhabitants Cambyretá has a quieter living environment than central Encarnación, with green residential neighbourhoods, schools, universities and shopping centres. Economically the town relies on commuting to Encarnación, small-scale industry, agriculture in the wider surroundings (rice, soybeans, maize) and services. Cambyretá also hosts several industrial parks and is an important educational hub housing the main campus of the National University of Itapúa. Notable sights include the modern parish church and the Centro Cultural.
