The Nyanza Genocide Memorial in Kicukiro, Kigali, is one of the capital's most significant memorial sites. It is the final resting place for thousands of victims who were killed at the École Technique Officielle (ETO) on Mount Kigali. These people had sought refuge under the protection of UN peacekeepers. When the UN troops withdrew on April 11, 1994, the refugees were left defenseless. They were forced by soldiers and militia to march to Nyanza hill, where they were systematically murdered. The memorial commemorates this act of abandonment and the failure of the international community. A commemoration ceremony is held here every year on April 11. The site symbolizes the moment hope for international protection was extinguished for many.
