Poliçan is an industrial town in southern Albania, established in the 1960s during the communist era as a center for the military industry. The town is spectacularly situated across several plateaus on the western slopes of Mount Tomorr, offering impressive views over the Osum Valley. For decades, Poliçan was a 'closed city' due to the presence of massive underground factories manufacturing ammunition and weapons, which are now partially decommissioned. Geographically, the town serves as a starting point for pilgrimages to the holy Mount Tomorr, a site of great significance for both Bektashi Muslims and Christians. The architecture is typical of socialist urban planning, featuring functional apartment blocks and wide public squares. The surrounding area is home to panoramic canyons and rivers, now utilized for adventure tourism like rafting. The transformation from a high-security industrial town into a hub for mountain and nature tourism defines Poliçan's current development. Despite its industrial history, the region is well-known for its production of raki and traditional cheeses.
