Tepelenë is a historically significant town in southern Albania, situated at a strategic junction where the Drino River flows into the Vjosa. The town is famously associated with Ali Pasha of Tepelena, the powerful 19th-century Ottoman ruler who was born here and constructed a massive fortress that still dominates the townscape. Geographically, Tepelenë sits at the mouth of the Këlcyra Gorge, making it a critical point for controlling north-south traffic in the region. Today, the town is widely known for its high-quality mineral water, bottled and distributed nationwide as 'Uji i Tepelenës'. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rugged limestone mountains and the Vjosa, recognized as one of Europe's last major wild rivers. Tepelenë also serves as a cultural guardian of Labëria's traditions, particularly its unique polyphonic singing and deep-rooted codes of hospitality.
