Baghlan Sugar Factory (Afghanistan)

Weather…

The Baghlan sugar factory, located in the northern province of the same name, is a historical landmark of Afghan industry. Founded in 1940, it was one of the first modern industrial plants in the country. The factory processed sugar beets grown in the fertile region and produced sugar for the domestic market. For decades, it was an important employer and a driver for the local agriculture. However, production was interrupted by wars and the collapse of state infrastructure, and the factory lay idle for a long time. There have been several attempts to restart production, as the revival of the factory is considered crucial for the economic development of Baghlan province. It would not only create jobs in the factory itself, but also provide a market for thousands of farmers for their sugar beets and reduce dependence on imported sugar. However, reactivation remains a complex challenge.
