Kariba Fish Farms, located on the shores of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, are among the largest inland fish farming operations in Africa. Established in the 1960s following the construction of the Kariba Dam, these farms utilize the artificial lake's waters to cultivate tilapia and other freshwater species. The farms produce over 10,000 metric tons of fish annually, supplying domestic markets and exporting to neighboring countries. They employ around 2,000 people, significantly boosting the local economy. The farms employ recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) to minimize water usage and environmental impact. Research collaborations with international institutions focus on improving feed efficiency and disease resistance. The operations have helped alleviate pressure on wild fish stocks in Lake Kariba, promoting sustainable fishery practices.
