San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the former capital of Tenerife, is a historical gem located in the Aguere Valley. Founded in 1496, it was the first non-fortified Spanish colonial city, designed with a grid system that became the template for major American cities like Havana and San Juan. This architectural and historical importance earned it a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1999. Its pedestrian streets are lined with brightly colored mansions, some dating back to the 16th century, featuring exquisite wooden balconies and peaceful inner courtyards. Key landmarks include the Cathedral of La Laguna and the Church of the Immaculate Conception, which has panoramic views from its iconic bell tower. As the seat of the University of La Laguna (founded in 1701), the city provides a lively student population and a thriving cultural scene. Due to its elevation (550m), the weather here is noticeably cooler and mistier than the coastal areas. The city is located right next to Tenerife North Airport (TFN) and serves as the gateway to the ancient laurel forests of the Anaga Rural Park.
