Sefula Mission (Zambia)

Weather…

Sefula Mission, established in 1886 by the French missionary François Coillard of the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society, is one of the oldest and most influential Christian outposts in Zambia. Located in the Western Province, it was the site of the first formal school in Barotseland, playing a foundational role in the modernization of the region’s education system. The mission was founded with the support of King Lewanika, reflecting a unique partnership between traditional authority and European missionary efforts. Over the decades, Sefula expanded its services to include a hospital and a specialized school for the blind, which remains a vital institution today. The historic church building and the surrounding campus are examples of early colonial architecture, built with locally fired bricks. Sefula continues to be a center of spiritual and social development.
