Chishimba Falls (Zambia)

Weather…

Chishimba Falls is located approximately 33 kilometers west of Kasama in the Northern Province of Zambia, situated along the Luombe River. The site is a complex of three successive waterfalls: Mutumuna Falls, Kaela Rapids, and the main Chishimba Falls. For the Bemba people, these falls are a sacred site where the spirit of Chishimba is believed to reside in the caves beneath the falling water. This spiritual significance has led to the long-term preservation of the surrounding rainforest, as local traditions forbade the cutting of trees or hunting in the immediate vicinity. The Zambian government has designated the area as a national monument to protect its ecological integrity and cultural heritage. The falls are most spectacular during the rainy season, which lasts from December to April, when the Luombe River is at its highest volume. A small-scale hydroelectric power station operates nearby, utilizing the river's flow to provide electricity to the Kasama district while maintaining the natural beauty of the primary viewing areas.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The falls are easily accessible via a well-signposted paved road branching off from the town of Kasama in northern Zambia. A short, well-maintained trail leads directly from the entrance gate to the main viewpoints.
📅
Best season
Viewing is spectacular just after the rainy season in April and May when the water volume is immense. However, the site remains a highly attractive and more accessible destination throughout the dry season.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The area features a series of cascades surrounded by lush riverine forest and rocky outcrops. The pathways are relatively flat and easy to navigate, with some stairs leading to the lower vantage points.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are sufficient for the paved and gravel paths. A waterproof jacket or poncho is highly recommended to protect against the substantial spray from the falls.
🅿️
Parking
A designated, secure parking area is located right at the main entrance facility. It is generally spacious enough to accommodate both private vehicles and larger tour buses.
⚠️
Safety
The rocks near the edge of the cascades are extremely slippery, so visitors must stay behind the safety barriers. Swimming is strictly prohibited in the turbulent pools directly beneath the main drops.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors spend between one and two hours walking the trails and taking photographs. A relaxed picnic in the adjacent scenic spots can easily extend the stay to a full afternoon.
