Lealui Royal Village (Zambia)

Weather…

Lealui Royal Village is the summer capital of the Litunga, the king of the Lozi people, situated in the heart of the Barotse Floodplain in Western Province. Established in 1868 by King Sipopa, it was constructed on a large artificial mound to protect it from the annual flooding of the Zambezi River. For half of the year, Lealui serves as the political and spiritual center of the Barotse Kingdom, housing the Litunga’s primary residence and administrative buildings. The village is the starting point for the world-famous Kuomboka ceremony, where the king and his court move to higher ground as the floodwaters rise. Its layout follows strict traditional protocols, with the palace surrounded by the homes of court officials and royal family members. The site is currently on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list due to its exceptional cultural and historical value.
