Bura Protected Area

The Jabal Bura Protected Area is located on the western edge of the Yemeni highlands, where the mountains drop steeply towards the Tihama coastal plain. It is one of the last areas in Yemen that still possesses significant stands of original subtropical dry forest. The region's enormous biodiversity has led to Jabal Bura being recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The dense forests are home to rare tree species, numerous medicinal plants, and rich wildlife, including baboons, hyenas, and a variety of birds of prey. The steep slopes are carved by deep wadis that often carry water even during the dry season, providing vital refuges for the fauna. For the local population, the area is of great significance as they practice traditional methods of sustainable forest management and beekeeping. Despite its protected status, the area is threatened by logging and agricultural expansion, prompting active local conservation programs. The misty forests and dramatic rock formations make Jabal Bura a unique ecosystem that provides a glimpse into the once-natural forestation of the Arabian Peninsula.
