The Al-Hajjarah mountain fortress in the Haraz Mountains is a memorable example of Yemeni defensive architecture. The settlement is built directly into the sheer cliffs, with multi-story houses constructed from massive stone blocks often without mortar. Some of these tower houses rise up to eight stories high, appearing as a natural extension of the mountain itself. Located at an altitude of 2300 meters on a narrow ridge, the fortress provided strategic control over the trade routes between Sana'a and the coast. Beyond its military importance, Al-Hajjarah was a significant cultural center in the region. The architecture, featuring decorated windows and robust foundations, showcases the mastery of Yemeni stonemasons.
