Zabid sits in the hot Tihama plain not far from the Red Sea and is one of the oldest cities in Yemen. From the 9th to the 13th centuries it was capital of the Ziyadid and later the Rasulid dynasties and one of the foremost centres of Islamic scholarship in the world. In the 9th century the mathematician al-Jawhari worked here on algebraic traditions, and tradition links the systematic development of algebra in part to Zabid. The town contains more than 80 historic mosques, including the Great Mosque founded in 819, alongside hundreds of traditional brick houses with intricate geometric facades. Its rectangular plan with four gates has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, although it is currently on the list of heritage in danger because of decay and conflict damage. Zabid was also famous for indigo dyeing and fine cotton textiles. The surrounding countryside still produces sorghum, sesame, bananas and mangoes in a tropical agriculture.
