Jabal Bura (Yemen)

Weather…

Jabal Bura is a striking granite massif located on the edge of the Tihama plain in western Yemen, regarded as one of the country's most critical ecological refuges. Rising steeply to approximately 2,400 meters, its slopes host one of the last remaining subtropical forests on the Arabian Peninsula. Due to this exceptional biodiversity, Jabal Bura has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The landscape is characterized by deep ravines, seasonal waterfalls, and dense vegetation that provides a habitat for numerous rare plant and animal species, including baboons and rare birds of prey. The local population resides in photogenic villages often perched on narrow rocky ridges and linked by a network of steep trails. The architecture is defined by the use of dark granite stone, giving the settlements a fortified appearance. Geologically, the massif is part of the Yemeni basement complex, exposed by tectonic forces during the opening of the Red Sea rift. The humid climate, caused by air masses rising from the coast, supports the cultivation of cereals and fruits in small terraced gardens. Jabal Bura stands as an outstanding example of the link between biological diversity and the traditional Yemeni cultural landscape.
