Bajil lies in Hudaydah governorate at the transition between the hot Tihama coastal plain and the steeply rising mountains of the western Yemeni highlands. Climatically the town is typically Tihama, with high temperatures and humidity, but it benefits from the nearby fertile Wadi Siham and Wadi Rima', which produce maize, sorghum, sesame and mangoes. Economically the most important asset is the cement plant of Bajil, built in the 1970s, one of the largest industrial facilities in northern Yemen and a major supplier of construction cement to the entire country. The town functions as a logistics hub between the port of Hudaydah and the highlands around Sanaa, hosting numerous shipping companies, workshops and wholesale markets. Characteristic are single-storey houses of mud and coral stone in the typical Tihama style, with elaborately carved wooden doors, as well as the round huts of surrounding villages. During the civil war the town was contested and received international humanitarian aid.
