Mota Island Mission History

The mission on Mota Island in the Banks group holds a fundamental place in the history of Christianity in Melanesia. In 1858, Bishop George Augustus Selwyn chose Mota as the first permanent headquarters for the Melanesian Mission. A critical historical turning point occurred when Bishop John Coleridge Patteson decided to adopt the Mota language as the 'lingua franca' for the entire mission. As a result, the Mota tongue became the medium of instruction in mission schools across the South Pacific, from the Solomon Islands to the New Hebrides. The mission at Mota promoted not only religious conversion but also widespread literacy and lasting changes in inter-island communication. Today, historical memorials and the local church bear witness to this era, when a small island became the linguistic and spiritual hub for a vast oceanic region.
