Lake Letas Biodiversity Zone (Vanuatu)

Weather…

Lake Letas on Gaua Island is the largest freshwater lake in Vanuatu and a major biodiversity hotspot in the South Pacific. Situated within the caldera of the active Mount Garet volcano, the lake sits at an elevation of approximately 418 meters above sea level. Ecologically, the lake is unique, providing an isolated habitat for specialized aquatic species, including endemic fish and rare waterbirds. The surrounding wetlands and dense rainforests are home to numerous orchids and ferns, thriving in the nutrient-rich volcanic soil. Historically, the lake is considered sacred by the local population and holds a central place in the mythology of Gaua islanders. The lake's waters exit through the Siri Waterfall, which, at 120 meters high, is one of the most spectacular in the region. Due to its ecological integrity, Lake Letas was nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004. Conservation initiatives are focused on shielding the lake from pollution and the threats of invasive species to preserve the delicate balance of this closed ecosystem.
