The bay's name is derived from volcanic gases escaping through the seabed, creating fizzing bubbles in the shallow water at low tide, much like in a glass of champagne. Geographically, the beach is located near Hog Harbour and is framed by volcanic formations. The fringing reef directly in front of the beach hosts a rich selection of hard corals and sponges that thrive in the nutrient-rich waters. These submarine gas vents indicate the ongoing volcanic activity beneath the New Hebrides archipelago. The reef provides a habitat for a variety of invertebrates and small reef fish seeking shelter in the shallow lagoons. Visiting
The Champagne Beach reefs are part of the same beach area and freely accessible as they lie in shallow water. The reefs are especially visible at low tide and provide unique snorkeling opportunities. Be careful not to touch the delicate corals.
Typical hours
The reefs are accessible at any time during daylight, but best conditions are at low tide. No official opening hours; low tide times vary daily and can be checked online. At high tide the bubbles are less visible.
Photography
Underwater shots of the reefs and rising bubbles are very photogenic. Use a waterproof housing or action cam with wide-angle to capture the volcanic gas streams. A polarizing filter on your camera reduces water surface glare.
Time needed
Allow at least one to two hours for snorkeling the reefs to explore different areas. Combining with a beach day can extend to four or five hours. The shallow water zone requires little effort.
Combine with
The reefs combine perfectly with Champagne Beach itself and the nearby Blue Hole. The Erromango Cultural Centre or Port Olry Beach are also worthy destinations in the region. A day trip from Luganville covers it all.
Getting there
The reefs are directly accessible from Champagne Beach, about 30 minutes north of Luganville. Parking is right by the beach. Entry into the water is gentle and easy - no special paths needed. Best reached by rental car or taxi.
Insider tip
Snorkel early morning for the best light and fewest day-trippers. Bring a waterproof pouch for valuables as there are no lockers on the beach. Watch out for sea urchins among the rocks.
