Lake Letas (Vanuatu)

Weather…

Lake Letas is the largest freshwater lake in Vanuatu, located in the center of the volcanic island of Gaua. Situated within a massive caldera at an elevation of approximately 418 meters, the lake is surrounded by lush tropical rainforests. Its distinctive crescent shape is formed by the active volcanic cone of Mount Garat, which rises on the western side of the caldera. Reaching depths of up to 119 meters, the lake's slightly sulfurous waters support unique aquatic life, including eels and freshwater prawns. The lake drains to the east via the Mbe Solomul River, which eventually plunges over the spectacular Siri Falls. Due to its ecological significance and pristine condition, Lake Letas was nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2004. Access to the lake remains challenging, involving multi-hour treks through dense jungle, which has helped preserve this remote natural sanctuary. For the local population, the lake is both a crucial resource and a site of significant spiritual importance.
