Big Bay, located on the northern coast of Espiritu Santo, is the largest bay in Vanuatu and a site of immense historical importance. In May 1606, the explorer Pedro Fernandes de Queirós landed here and established the short-lived settlement of 'New Jerusalem,' believing he had discovered the legendary southern continent. Geographically, the bay is bordered to the east by the Cumberland Peninsula and receives significant freshwater inflow from the Jordan River. The region hosts Vanuatu's first national conservation area, the Vatthe Conservation Area, which protects over 2,000 hectares of pristine lowland rainforest. Biodiversity in the area is exceptional, featuring numerous endemic bird species and rare tropical flora. Despite the failed Spanish colonization attempt, the bay remains a potent symbol of early European exploration in the Pacific and a sanctuary for intact Melanesian ecosystems.

Visiting

Big Bay is the largest bay in Vanuatu, featuring black sand beaches and the Vatthe Conservation Area. The area is freely accessible, but some parts require a permit for entry into the conservation area.

Typical hours

The bay and beach are accessible anytime, but the Conservation Area typically has fixed hours from morning to afternoon. Check ahead at the visitor center for exact times.

The black sand beaches and lush greenery offer excellent photo subjects. Use morning or evening hours for soft light and dramatic contrasts.

Time needed

Allow at least two to three hours for a visit to the bay and a walk through the Conservation Area. If you want to hike or birdwatch, plan half a day.

Combine with

Combine Big Bay with nearby Champagne Beach or a boat trip to Port Olry. A tour of the caves and rivers inland Espiritu Santo is also worthwhile.

Getting there

Big Bay is in northern Espiritu Santo and best reached by car or organized tour from Luganville. Roads are partly unpaved, a 4WD is recommended.

Insider tip

Bring swimwear and a towel for a swim - the black sand beaches are unique. Don't forget insect repellent and sturdy footwear for hiking in the Conservation Area.
