Aralkum Desert (Kazakhstan)

Weather…

The Aralkum Desert is one of the youngest deserts in the world, having formed on the drying bed of the Aral Sea. Since the 1960s, the massive diversion of water from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers has caused the water surface to shrink dramatically, exposing over 60,000 square kilometers of former seabed. This new landscape is characterized by extreme salinity and toxic dust storms that carry pesticide residues from agriculture over vast distances. The Aralkum serves as a symbol of one of humanity's greatest environmental disasters and poses an enormous health burden on the local population. Ecological rehabilitation efforts include planting saxaul shrubs to stabilize the soil and mitigate erosion. Despite the hostile conditions, specialized desert flora is beginning to take root, while the former fishing and shipping industries have completely vanished.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The remote desert region is best accessed from the remaining towns on the former shoreline, such as Moynaq. For a more in-depth exploration of the dried-up seabed, robust four-wheel drive vehicles are absolutely necessary and highly recommended.
📅
Best season
A visit is most advisable during the more moderate transitional seasons of spring and early autumn. Summers here are often unbearably hot, while in winter, icy winds whip unhindered across the vast, completely flat expanse of the plains.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The ground consists predominantly of extremely salty sand and cracked mud, interspersed with barren, salt-tolerant shrubs. The vast, surreal plains are occasionally interrupted by rusting shipwrecks, standing as silent witnesses to the past.
🎒
What to bring
Given the extreme aridity and dust generation, carrying large quantities of drinking water and good dust protection for the face are essential. Closed, sturdy shoes and strong sun protection are mandatory for walks across the dried-up areas.
🅿️
Parking
Regular parking facilities are practically only found on the outskirts of the adjacent towns. Anyone venturing deeper into the basin must rely on experienced drivers, as parking on the often treacherous surface requires a great deal of skill.
⚠️
Safety
Due to dangerous, soft salt pans, tours off the main tracks should never be undertaken without an experienced local guide. The ubiquitous, toxic salt storms can also cause serious respiratory problems if they occur unexpectedly.
⏱️
Time needed
A visit to the famous ship graveyards on the edge of the desert usually takes about half a day. However, for more extensive expeditions to comprehend the true extent of this ecological change, one to two full days are mostly required.

Facts

  • The Aralkum Desert grows by approximately 1,000 square kilometers every year.
  • Dust storms from the Aralkum have been detected as far away as the Himalayas.
  • Millions of saxaul seedlings have been planted to prevent wind erosion and sand drift.
  • Rusting shipwrecks near Muynak testify to the former status of the port city.
  • The seabed soil contains high concentrations of sodium chloride and fertilizer residues.
  • Desertification has caused the local climate to become increasingly dry and hot.
