Gissar State Nature Reserve (Uzbekistan)

Weather…

The Gissar State Nature Reserve is located on the western slopes of the Gissar Range in the Qashqadaryo region and is one of the largest protected areas in Uzbekistan. It encompasses an impressive vertical zonation ranging from foothill steppes to permanent glaciers and alpine meadows. Within its borders lies Khazret Sultan, which at 4,643 meters is the highest peak in the country. The reserve is a crucial sanctuary for the endangered snow leopard, as well as for the Siberian ibex and the brown bear. Geologically, the area is characterized by deep gorges, such as the spectacular Aksu canyon, and numerous karst caves. It also serves an important hydrological function, as it contains the headwaters of significant rivers like the Aksu and Tanhasdarya. The pristine high-mountain nature makes the Gissar Reserve one of Central Asia's most valuable ecological treasures.
