Kitab State Geological Reserve (Uzbekistan)

Weather…

The Kitab State Geological Reserve is located in the foothills of the Zeravshan Range in the Qashqadaryo region and is a world-renowned monument of Earth's history. Established in 1979, it protects unique paleontological profiles that document the transition from the Lower to Middle Devonian. The site is recognized as a 'Global Stratotype Section and Point' (GSSP) and serves as an international reference for the Emsian stage of the Devonian period, dating back approximately 400 million years. Scientists from around the globe visit Kitab to study the exceptionally well-preserved fossils of corals, brachiopods, and goniatites. Beyond its geological significance, the reserve features a pretty mountain landscape with deep canyons and rich alpine flora. It also provides a habitat for rare birds of prey and mammals living in the inaccessible rocky slopes of the Zeravshan ridge. Kitab thus stands as a bridge between geological heritage and living nature.
