Jizzakh is the capital of the eponymous province in central Uzbekistan, strategically situated between Tashkent and Samarkand at the foot of the Nuratau Mountains. As far back as Silk Road times, an important caravan station here linked the fertile Mirzachul steppe with the oases of Sogdiana. Today around 175,000 people live in Jizzakh. The city saw rapid growth in the 1970s, when the Soviet Union brought the nearby Hungry Steppe under cultivation and built large new irrigation canals. Cotton and grain farming, food processing, machine building, and textiles dominate the economy. In recent years a modern special economic zone has been established here with Chinese and South Korean investment, giving the region a fresh industrial boost.
