The José Ignacio Lighthouse is an emblematic landmark of the coastal resort of the same name, located in the Maldonado Department, Uruguay. It was built in 1877 on the rockiest point of the peninsula to provide navigational safety in a hazardous coastal region. The cylindrical stone tower stands 25 meters high, and its lantern is situated 32.5 meters above sea level. The lighthouse's light, a white flash every two seconds, has a range of approximately 9 nautical miles and is an essential reference for fishermen and sailors. The construction was overseen by the Hydrographic Commission, led by engineer César Giusani. The lighthouse is surrounded by a small white house, which was originally the lighthouse keeper's residence. Although not normally open to the public for climbing, the lighthouse is the central feature of the village and a popular spot for watching sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean. Its presence has significantly influenced José Ignacio's development from a small fishing village into one of South America's most exclusive and chic resorts.
