Dragons Barracks
The Dragons Barracks in Maldonado is a significant historical military building, with construction starting in 1771 by order of Montevideo's governor, Joaquín de Viana, and completed in 1797. Designed by Spanish engineer Bartolomé Howel, it served as a strategic base for the Blandengues cavalry regiment, which secured the borders of the Spanish Colonial Empire. The structure occupies an entire city block and is designed in a neoclassical style, featuring robust stone walls and a large central parade ground. During the Napoleonic Wars and the South American wars of independence, the barracks played a crucial role. It was here that José Gervasio Artigas, Uruguay's national hero, received his military training. Following its military use, the building was adapted for various civilian purposes. Today, it houses the Didactic Artiguista Museum, dedicated to the life of Artigas, as well as other cultural institutions and a public school, making it a hub of community life and historical remembrance.
