The Museo del Mar, located in La Barra, near Punta del Este, is a unique natural history museum dedicated to the sea and its creatures. It was founded from the private collection of Pablo Etchegaray, who gathered thousands of specimens and artifacts over several decades. The museum displays an astonishing variety of exhibits, including a vast collection of seashells from all over the world, whale skeletons, shark jaws, corals, and an extensive taxidermy collection of marine birds and mammals. The exhibits are arranged in themed rooms, such as the Pirate Room or the room dedicated to the history of beach resorts. Although its name is 'Museum of the Sea,' it also includes an eclectic collection of insects and even old everyday objects, reflecting the founder's passion for collecting. It is a fascinating and educational attraction for all ages, offering a deep insight into the diversity of marine life and the natural history of Uruguay and beyond.
