Aiguá is a small city located in the north of the Maldonado Department, set in an easy on the eye hilly landscape. Its name comes from the Guaraní language and means 'running water,' a reference to the many streams in the region. The city was officially founded on May 10, 1906, and serves as a center for the surrounding, sparsely populated rural area, whose economy is based mainly on cattle ranching and agriculture. One of the main attractions near Aiguá is the Grutas de Salamanca, a series of granite caves of geological and historical interest. These caves once served as a refuge for indigenous peoples and later for revolutionaries. In recent years, Aiguá has also gained a reputation for producing high-quality honey and, thanks to its tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty, attracts visitors looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the coast.
