Leonel Viera Bridge (Uruguay)

Weather…

The Leonel Viera Bridge, popularly known as the 'Puente Ondulado' (Wavy Bridge), is an iconic bridge in Punta del Este. It crosses the Maldonado Stream, connecting the peninsula to the resort town of La Barra. Built in 1965, the bridge was designed by the Uruguayan engineer Leonel Viera. Its revolutionary construction, based on the principle of a stressed ribbon bridge, was a novelty at the time of its construction. The bridge consists of three undulations, giving drivers the sensation of riding a roller coaster, which has made it a popular tourist attraction. It was originally built to replace the old wooden bridge and to handle the growing traffic. Due to its popularity, a second, identical bridge was built right next to it in 1999 to further improve traffic flow. Today, the two parallel wavy bridges are a distinctive landmark of the region and a testament to innovative engineering.
