Zbarazh (Ukraine)

Weather…

Zbarazh Castle is a preeminent example of 17th-century fortification art in Western Ukraine. Designed based on the sketches of Italian architect Vincenzo Scamozzi, the castle seamlessly blends the elegance of a Renaissance residence with the robustness of a star-shaped bastion fortress. Its regular square layout, reinforced by massive corner bastions and a deep moat, made it one of the most advanced military structures of its era. The castle earned its place in history during the epic Siege of 1649, when a Polish garrison held out for seven weeks against the combined forces of Bohdan Khmelnytsky and his Tatar allies. These dramatic events were later immortalized in Henryk Sienkiewicz's classic novel 'With Fire and Sword.' Today, the fully restored castle serves as a museum, housing a vast collection of weaponry, archaeological artifacts, and unique wooden baroque sculptures that reflect the region's rich artistic heritage. Visitors can descend into the cool casemates, visit the chilling torture chamber, and admire the reconstructed interiors of the main palace. The surrounding park has peaceful views of the Hnizna River valley and the town of Zbarazh, where the 17th-century Bernardine monastery also stands. Accessible within a short drive from Ternopil, Zbarazh is a captivating destination for those interested in the grand military and literary history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth era.
