Zbarazh Castle (Ukraine)

Weather…

Zbarazh Castle is an imposing 17th-century fortification located in the town of Zbarazh in the Ternopil region. Built between 1626 and 1631 under the direction of the Zbaraski princes, its architecture combines Renaissance elements with the modern defensive strategies of that era. The complex is designed on a pentagonal floor plan with bastions and was once surrounded by a deep moat. The castle gained international fame during the Siege of 1649 during the Khmelnytsky Uprising, when Polish-Lithuanian troops under Jeremi Wiśniowiecki held out against Cossack and Tatar attacks for several weeks. Over the centuries, the castle was damaged and rebuilt multiple times, served occasionally as barracks, and eventually fell into ruin. Today, the restored castle is part of the 'Castles of Ternopil' National Reserve and houses numerous exhibitions on history, weaponry, and art. The extensive casemates and the magnificent palace building in the courtyard convey a vivid picture of the military and aristocratic past of the region.
