Zviahel, known as Novohrad-Volynskyi until 2022, is a historic city in the Zhytomyr Oblast, situated along the Sluch River. Its first recorded mention as Zviahel appears in the Galician-Volhynian Chronicle in 1256. The city suffered destruction during the Mongol invasion of 1257 but was later rebuilt under Lithuanian and Polish rule, serving as a vital defensive castle. In 1795, following the partitions of Poland, it was renamed Novohrad-Volynskyi by the Russian Empire and designated as an administrative hub. The city is internationally celebrated as the birthplace of Lesya Ukrainka, Ukraine's most prominent female poet and a symbol of national identity; her childhood home is now a national museum. Geographically, Zviahel sits at a strategic intersection of routes connecting Kyiv and Warsaw, which has historically fueled its growth as a commercial center. The restoration of its original name in 2022 reflects a broader movement of historical reclamation in Ukraine. Today, the city is a regional leader in food processing, furniture manufacturing, and light industry, while maintaining its rich archaeological and literary heritage.
