Khust is a historically significant city in the Zakarpattia Oblast of western Ukraine, located at the confluence of the Tysa and Rika rivers. The city is best known for the ruins of Khust Castle, an 11th-century fortress perched atop a 174-meter-high volcanic cone. This castle served for centuries as protection for salt trade routes from the Carpathians and was a vital stronghold of the Kingdom of Hungary. In 1939, Khust briefly gained international attention when it was declared the capital of the short-lived Republic of Carpatho-Ukraine for a few days. Geographically, the city lies in an easy on the eye basin and is famous for the nearby "Valley of Narcissi," a unique biosphere reserve featuring wild narrow-leafed daffodils. The city's architecture is characterized by a mix of interwar Czech influences and Hungarian medieval elements, such as the 14th-century Gothic Reformed Church. Today, Khust serves as a hub for light industry and tourism within the Maramures region.
