Vasylkiv is a historic city in the Kyiv Oblast, with origins dating back to 988 when Vladimir the Great established a fortress here to defend Kyiv. Originally founded as Vasyliev, the town developed into a significant spiritual and military outpost. An architectural gem of the city is St. Anthony's Church, built in the 18th century by architect Stepan Kovnir in the Ukrainian Baroque style. In modern history, Vasylkiv is primarily known for its major military airbase, which plays a central role in Ukraine's defense infrastructure. The city is situated on the Stuhna River and is characterized by a hilly landscape rich in archaeological sites from the Trypillia culture. Beyond its military importance, Vasylkiv is a center for the production of ceramics and textiles. Its proximity to the capital, Kyiv, makes the city an important strategic and economic satellite location.
