Babi Yar Memorial Site (Ukraine)

Weather…

Babi Yar is a site of profound historical trauma and a central symbol of the 'Holocaust by bullets' in Eastern Europe. In this ravine in Kyiv, Nazi occupying forces executed over 33,700 Jewish men, women, and children within just two days in September 1941. Throughout the occupation until 1943, the site became a mass execution ground for an estimated 100,000 people, including Romani people, Soviet prisoners of war, and Ukrainian nationalists. For decades during the Soviet era, the specific Jewish nature of the tragedy was downplayed or suppressed. It was only after 1991 that specific monuments, such as the Menorah, were erected to honor the Jewish victims. Today, the area is a National Historical Memorial Preserve, featuring various installations and a research center dedicated to documenting the victims' names and ensuring that the horrors of the massacre are never forgotten by future generations.
