Boyarka is a city in the Kyiv Oblast that rose to prominence in the late 19th century as an exclusive health resort and summer retreat for the Kyiv elite. The town's development was significantly bolstered by the completion of the Kyiv-Vinnytsia railway line in 1870, making Boyarka a popular destination for leisure and convalescence. It achieved literary fame through Nikolai Ostrovsky, who wrote portions of his novel 'How the Steel Was Tempered' here, and the Jewish writer Sholem Aleichem, who used the town as a setting for his stories. Surrounded by dense pine forests valued for their therapeutic air, Boyarka became home to numerous sanatoriums specializing in respiratory health. The city also features a local history museum that documents its rich past and its connections to various historical figures. In modern times, Boyarka functions primarily as an attractive residential area within Kyiv's suburban belt while retaining its identity as a green oasis. St. Michael's Church, built in 1901, remains one of the city's most prominent architectural landmarks.
