Okhtyrka is a city of significant historical and strategic importance located in the Sumy Oblast of northeastern Ukraine, situated along the banks of the Vorskla River. Founded in 1641 as a Polish fortress, it soon evolved into a major center of Sloboda Ukraine and the headquarters of the Okhtyrka Cossack Regiment. The city's most prominent architectural landmark is the majestic Intercession Cathedral, built in the Baroque style between 1753 and 1768 based on designs by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. During the 19th century, Okhtyrka flourished as a commercial and industrial hub, particularly known for its textile manufacturing and machinery production. In 2022, during the Russian invasion, the city gained international recognition for its fierce resistance, eventually being awarded the title "Hero City of Ukraine." Despite sustaining heavy damage to its infrastructure and heritage sites, Okhtyrka continues to serve as a symbol of Ukrainian resilience and remains an essential cultural and economic pillar of the region.
