Buhoma is a small settlement located in the northern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is globally renowned as the starting point for mountain gorilla trekking. It was here in 1993 that the first gorilla family was habituated for tourism, marking the beginning of Uganda's conservation success story. The village buzzes with the excitement of trekkers preparing to venture into this UNESCO World Heritage site. Beyond gorilla trekking, Buhoma gives fantastic opportunities for nature walks, birdwatching, and cultural encounters with the Batwa (pygmy) people, the forest's original inhabitants. Local community projects, including a community hospital and schools, highlight the positive socio-economic impact of sustainable tourism. The landscape is dramatic, featuring steep, mist-covered hills and an incredible variety of plant and animal life. The best time for trekking is during the dry seasons from June to August and December to February. Accommodations in Buhoma are some of the finest in Uganda, ranging from rustic campsites to world-class luxury lodges. Dining options often feature a mix of international standards and local Ugandan flavors. Reaching Buhoma involves a scenic but long drive on unpaved roads or a domestic flight to nearby Kihihi airstrip. Visiting Buhoma is a life-changing journey that directly contributes to the survival of the endangered mountain gorilla population.
