Mount Kisinga is one of the lesser-known peaks within the Rwenzori Mountains of western Uganda, close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As part of the Rwenzori range, also known as the 'Mountains of the Moon', Kisinga is a non-volcanic, fault-block mountain. The Rwenzori chain is unique in the East African Rift for not being of volcanic origin, but instead created by the uplift of gneiss and granite rocks. Mount Kisinga reaches an elevation of approximately 4,800 meters and is often shrouded in clouds and mist. Its slopes are covered in the typical Rwenzori afro-alpine vegetation, famous for its giant plants like groundsels (Senecio) and lobelias. The mountain is situated within the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While not as famous as the highest peaks of Margherita or Alexandra, Kisinga has challenging trekking routes and spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers. Ascending it requires good acclimatization and mountaineering experience, as conditions are often wet, muddy, and cold. The mountain contributes to the region's unique biodiversity and is part of the water catchment for rivers that flow into the Semliki River.
