Fort Portal is located in western Uganda at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains and is uniquely recognized as the country's 'Tourism City.' It serves as the seat of the Tooro Kingdom, with the Omukama's (King's) Karuzika Palace perched on a hill overlooking the town. Founded in 1893, it was named after Sir Gerald Portal, a British Special Commissioner. The city is surrounded by vast tea estates and serves as the gateway to Kibale National Park, renowned for its chimpanzees, and the Amabere Caves. Geographically, Fort Portal sits at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters, ensuring a pleasant montane climate. The surrounding region is also famous for its numerous volcanic crater lakes. In recent years, Fort Portal has grown as a hub for higher education and sustainable tourism, and it was officially inaugurated as a city in 2020.
