It serves as the seat of the Tooro Kingdom, with the Omukama's (King's) Karuzika Palace perched on a hill overlooking the town. Founded in 1893, it was named after Sir Gerald Portal, a British Special Commissioner. The city is surrounded by vast tea estates and serves as the gateway to Kibale National Park, renowned for its chimpanzees, and the Amabere Caves. Geographically, Fort Portal sits at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters, ensuring a pleasant montane climate. The surrounding region is also famous for its numerous volcanic crater lakes.
