Rwenzori Mountains (Uganda)

Weather…

The Rwenzori Mountains, often referred to as the 'Mountains of the Moon', are a spectacular mountain range in western Uganda on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Unlike most African mountains, they are not volcanic in origin but are a tectonically uplifted block of crystalline rock. The range reaches an elevation of 5,109 meters at Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, making it the third highest in Africa. A unique feature of the Rwenzori is its glaciers and snowfields near the equator, although they are rapidly shrinking due to climate change. The slopes are covered in unique and luxuriant vegetation, ranging from tropical rainforest to alpine meadows with giant lobelias and senecios. Most of the range is protected by the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, established in 1991 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. The challenging terrain and unpredictable weather make trekking here an adventure, rewarded with wide-open landscapes.

📅
Best season
The best conditions are usually found during the dry seasons from December to February and June to August. However, rain is possible year-round in this equatorial mountain range.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape features notoriously boggy trails, steep ascents, and rugged rocky sections. High altitudes involve traversing glaciers and navigating challenging alpine environments.
🎒
What to bring
Essential equipment includes high-quality waterproof clothing, sturdy rubber boots for the bogs, and warm layers for freezing summit nights. Specialized mountaineering gear is required for the highest peaks.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles are generally left safely at the national park headquarters or at designated lodges near the trailhead. It is highly recommended to arrange secure parking through your tour operator.
⚠️
Safety
Altitude sickness is a significant risk, so proper acclimatization is strictly necessary. Always hike with experienced local guides who are familiar with the treacherous bogs and changing weather.
