Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a paradise for experienced mountaineers and nature lovers. While most African parks are famous for their savannas, Rwenzori impresses with its mystical cloud forests, giant lobelias, and the eternal ice of Mount Margherita, Africa's third-highest peak. Hikers come here to experience an untouched wilderness that differs drastically from the rest of the region. The landscape transitions from tropical rainforest to alpine meadows and finally to rocky glaciers. The biodiversity is remarkable, featuring many endemic bird species and rare primates. The treks are challenging and often muddy, but they reward visitors with spectacular views found nowhere else on the continent. It is a place of silence and raw natural power. Local cuisine in the surrounding villages has simple but nutritious dishes like Matooke (steamed green bananas) and fresh fish from the mountain lakes. Access is usually through the town of Kasese, where guided tours begin. It is highly recommended to book a licensed guide, as the terrain can be treacherous. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons from June to August and December to February. During these months, visibility of the peaks is at its best and the trails are slightly less slippery. However, one should be prepared for any weather, as rain can occur in the mountains at any time.
