Mount Elgon Coffee Region (Uganda)

Weather…

The Mount Elgon coffee region in eastern Uganda is famous for producing high-quality Arabica coffee. The slopes of this vast extinct shield volcano provide good conditions for coffee cultivation: high altitudes between 1,600 and 1,900 meters, fertile volcanic soils, and ample rainfall. The coffee grown here, often known as Bugisu coffee, is traditionally cultivated by Bagisu farmers in small gardens under the shade of banana trees and other trees. This shade-grown method contributes to biodiversity and results in slower ripening of the coffee cherries, leading to a more complex flavor profile. Coffee from this region is known for its full body, medium acidity, and wine-like flavor notes. Coffee production is the most important economic activity for the communities on Mount Elgon, providing income for thousands of smallholder farmers. The region, particularly near Sipi Falls, also attracts tourists who participate in coffee tours.
