Mount Elgon National Park straddles the border between Uganda and Kenya. Mount Elgon itself is an extinct shield volcano that was once higher than Kilimanjaro. Today, it impresses with its massive caldera and diverse vegetation zones. For hikers, the park has a less crowded alternative to East Africa's more famous peaks, with trails passing through bamboo forests and heather moorlands. A special highlight is the numerous caves, such as Kitum Cave, which are visited by elephants to lick salt from the walls. The waterfalls on the slopes, including the nearby Sipi Falls, provide dramatic photo opportunities. The flora, with giant lobelias and groundsels, is typically Afro-alpine, giving the landscape a prehistoric appearance. The region is world-famous for its Bugisu coffee. Visitors can take coffee tours to witness the process from bean to cup. Access is via the town of Mbale. The climb to the summit (Wagagai) typically takes 4 to 5 days and does not require technical climbing equipment. The best time for trekking is during the dry seasons from June to August and December to March. During these periods, the trails are solid and the likelihood of clear summit views is highest. However, nights at high altitudes can get extremely cold, so visitors must be prepared.
