Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

The Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar is the most iconic landmark of Ancient Merv and a masterpiece of Seljuk architecture. Constructed in the mid-12th century, shortly before the Sultan's death in 1157, it was designed as the center of a large religious complex in the heart of Sultan Kala. The structure features a massive cubic base topped by a monumental dome, which was originally double-shelled and covered in brilliant turquoise tiles. This innovative dome construction was a technical marvel of its time, influencing architectural designs across Central Asia and Persia for centuries. Despite the loss of its outer blue glaze over time, the intricate brickwork and interior stuccos remain as evidence of the empire's artistic zenith. Remarkably, the mausoleum survived the catastrophic Mongol invasion of 1221, standing as a lone sentinel amidst the city's ruins. Today, after extensive restoration with international support, it serves as a major pilgrimage site and a symbol of the Golden Age of the Great Seljuk Empire in modern Turkmenistan.
