With about 130,000 inhabitants, Mary is the fourth-largest city of Turkmenistan and the capital of the eponymous region, lying along the Murghab River on the southern fringe of the Karakum Desert. The modern town was refounded by Russian forces in 1884 under the name Merv, succeeding the ancient metropolis of the same name only 30 kilometres away. Ancient Merv, once dubbed the Queen of the World, was among the largest cities on Earth in the 12th century; today its ruins form a UNESCO World Heritage site spanning Seljuk, Parthian and Sasanian remains. Modern Mary is a hub for cotton, natural gas and carpet industries; the Galkynysh Gas Field south of the city ranks among the world's largest. Notable landmarks include the regional history museum, the Kuli Khan Mosque and the tsarist-era railway station.
