Ýolöten is a small town of about 25,000 inhabitants in Mary Region, lying some 60 kilometres south of the regional capital along the Murghab River. It owes its fame mainly to the nearby Galkynysh Gas Field (formerly South Yolotan-Osman), which with estimated reserves of around 27 trillion cubic metres ranks among the world's largest and has been developed in successive phases since 2013. This boom turned Ýolöten into a strategic centre of Turkmen energy. Before the gas era it was a quiet farming oasis based on cotton and sheep breeding. Today a large share of the population works in gas, services and construction. Notable sights include the Parthian-period Bagirdepe burial mound just outside town and the Ruhnama Mosque on the central square, complementing the field's heritage.
