Gyz Gala Fortress (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

Gyz Gala, also known as the 'Maiden's Fortress', is one of the most distinctive and best-preserved monuments in ancient Merv, located in southeastern Turkmenistan. The structure, which likely dates back to the 6th or 7th century, is an outstanding example of a medieval 'koshk' or fortified palace. It is particularly characterized by its high, corrugated mud-brick outer walls, which give the fortress a unique, fluted appearance. This architectural design served not only defensive purposes but also provided natural cooling for the interior through the shadows cast by the ridges. The fortress was originally two stories high and contained numerous rooms arranged around a central courtyard. Gyz Gala played a significant role as a residence for local rulers during the Sasanian period and later under Islamic rule. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Merv, Gyz Gala stands today as a symbol of architectural innovation and the rich history of the Silk Road.
