Baýramaly lies about 30 kilometres east of Mary in the southern Karakum region and has roughly 90,000 inhabitants. The town was founded in the 19th century as a station on the Trans-Caspian Railway and named after Bayram-Ali, the last khan of Merv. It stands directly beside the UNESCO World Heritage site of ancient Merv, whose medieval walls, the mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar and the Erk-Kala citadel rank among the most outstanding archaeological monuments of Central Asia. Baýramaly is also celebrated for its uniquely dry desert climate, which from the 1930s onwards drew sanatoria specialised in kidney and heart diseases. Today the city's economy rests on cotton ginning, food processing and a modest flow of cultural tourism centred on the nearby excavations and the surviving railway heritage.
